Privacy Policy
In one paragraph: the Field Companion keeps everything you write on your own device. The app has no account, no login, and no server of ours. It does not send your entries, your photos, or anything about you to us or to anyone else. The only network activity is the app store’s own purchase system, which handles subscriptions.
1. What the app stores, and where
The app stores the following in its private storage on your device only:
- Incident entries you log: date and time, the tactic you chose, the indicators you marked, an intensity from 1 to 5, and any note you write.
- Photos you attach to an entry. A photo is reduced in size inside the app and stored with the entry. It is never uploaded.
- Answers you type into the ledger prompts for a tactic.
- App settings, such as whether the Quick Exit explanation and the walkthrough have been shown, and a flag recording that Full Access has been unlocked on this device.
You can delete all of it at any time from the ME tab (“Delete all my entries from this device”), remove single entries from the LOG tab, or delete the app, which removes everything the app stored. We cannot see, recover, or restore your entries — we never had them.
2. What we do not collect
We do not collect personal information, contact details, location, contacts, usage analytics, crash reports, or advertising identifiers. The app contains no analytics or advertising software and does not track you across apps or websites. Nothing on screen identifies you while the app is open: there is no name, no email address, and no profile.
3. Subscriptions
Full Access is an auto-renewing subscription billed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), never by us. We never see your payment details. On your device, the app asks the store whether a subscription is active in order to unlock Full Access; that check happens between the app and the store on your device. Your purchase history is governed by Apple’s privacy policy or Google’s privacy policy. Manage or cancel a subscription in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
4. Accounts created in earlier versions (1.4 to 1.7)
Earlier versions of the app offered an optional username, email address and passphrase for saving entries across devices. Entries were encrypted on the device with a key derived from the passphrase before anything was uploaded, so we could not read them; a lost passphrase made them unrecoverable by design. The current version does not use these accounts and does not sync.
If you created such an account, the encrypted data and the email address you used remain stored with our processor, Google Firebase, until deleted. You can have the account and everything stored under it deleted at any time: see blackswansundercover.com/delete-account.html, or email contact@blackswansundercover.com from the address you signed up with. Deletion is completed within 30 days. Entries on your device are unaffected by account deletion and are removed only by you, in the app.
5. Children
The app is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because the app collects nothing, no information from anyone is held by us.
6. What the app is not
The Field Companion is for education, self-reflection, and personal growth only. It is not psychotherapy, counseling, mental-health treatment, coaching, medical or psychiatric care, legal or financial advice, crisis intervention, or emergency services, and using it creates no professional or clinical relationship. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. In the United States, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is 988 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799-7233; the GET HELP NOW button in the app lists these and other lines.
7. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version is posted at this address with a new “last updated” date. Because the app stores nothing with us, a change cannot affect data we hold about you — there is none.
